The Pup in the Ruffled Cap, The Boy in Papa’s Shoe
An Exceptional Auction of Rare Antique Dolls

Sunday, March 28, 2010
(note the Sunday auction day)
At the Hilton in Short Hills, New Jersey

The auction ranges across the collecting spectrum, offering the best of the best in all doll collecting categories. Heubach figures are notable not only for their rarity of subject, but for their grand size. They pose beautifully alongside rare early Heubach character children including a large painted eye googly, and girls with exquisitely sculpted hair. A collection of rare models designed by Grace Storey Putnam will astonish collectors who know only of her classic By-lo baby; of particular note is the exceptionally rare “Baby-kins” of which few examples are known to exist, and few have ever been photographed.

Also included is “Fly-lo” with a hand-written provenance note by Grace Storey Putnam telling of the doll’s creation. Collectors of Schoenhut will find not only wonderful dolls, several of the children in near mint condition, but also the exceptionally rare “Japanese Man” in his original costume, and the Manikin, as well as rarely found Schoenhut games, toys and accessories. For lovers of French bebes the offerings are spectacular, ranging from several splendid Bru bebes (one from original family estate) to examples by Jumeau, Schmitt, Steiner, and even a very special and beautiful “H” bebe. Too, the French ladies are in attendance, most wearing their original 19th century gowns and accessories; more than ten beautiful examples are offered.

Cloth dolls range from early American folk models to a delightful Tweedledee and Tweedledum by Old Cottage and an early Raggedy Ann. There are fine early paper mache dolls, mostly wearing their original costumes, rare early period porcelain ladies, Door of Hope collections, early Steiff doll and animals, wonderful automata including a superb Phalibois Monkey Marquis as Patisserie Chef, all-bisque characters ranging from Max and Moritz to Mildred, a collection of early Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls and several dollhouses and doll house furnishings including that of Tynietoy and Christian Hacker. The auction contains more than 300 lots of very special choices. All of the items can be viewed online after March 10 at www.theriaults.com and click on the button for Proxibid.
