22" (56 cm.) All-cloth doll with flat-dimensional face, oil-painted facial features and hair, painted shaded brown hair with thick curls at the forehead and shaded coloring of hair at the back, painted large brown eyes, brown eyeliner, single-stroke brows, outlined nose, closed mouth with extended center line, blushed cheeks, muslin stitch-jointed body with oil-painted hands, nicely costumed. Condition: generally excellent, some light flaking of paint at back of head. Marks: The Columbian Doll Manufactured by Marietta Adams Ruttan Oswego, N.Y. Comments: circa 1892, designed and made by the Adams sisters, Emma and Marietta, the doll won the Gold Medal at the 1892 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Value Points: historically important American doll with beautiful original oil painted features and hair, maker's signature. Ex-June Ellen Lane Collection.
