14" (36 cm.) l. x 4"h. x 10"d. Of finest mahogany, with angled sides and lids, very elaborate bone inlay in garland and floral designs, ball feet, and carved wooden ring handles, the sewing box opens to a superbly-fitted interior; a leather-covered back wall decorated with tufted blue silk and elaborate gilt painting, opens to reveal a secret panel, and a lift-out tray in the base fitted with silk or leather covered niches which contain more than 18 carved bone sewing tools including superb scissors, tape measure with stenciled inch measurements, needle holders, spools and more. Beneath the tray is another hidden compartment, and the box is fitted with its original lock (incised "Patent") and key. Excellent condition. English, Mid-1800s.
