19" (48 cm.) Bisque socket head portraying adult woman with angular features, brown glass eyes set deeply into narrow eye sockets, ochre eye shadow encircles the sockets, high arched feathered brows, accented nostrils on strongly shaped nose, closed mouth with firmly-set lips, center accent line extends beyond the lips forming into dimples, brunette mohair wig, French composition fully jointed slender lady-shaped body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Van Rozen France Depose (raised lettering at back of head). Comments: Circa 1915, designed by Belgian-born artist Jeanne Van Rozen in the early 20th century; the artist became involved in the French Renaissance of the Dolls movement, sculpting two different facial models for dolls, one solemn and the other (this example) smiling. According to The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer "it is likely that only a very few were ever made". Value Points: very rare model with superbly sculpted details, having pronounced cheek and jawbones, and artistic details including all-around eye shadow, unusual lip design; the doll wears fine antique silk fashion gown, undergarments, boots.
