Description
16" (41 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead of strongly-featured man with rich complexion, his head turned to the side, bald pate with shaded hair shadow and sculpted center crown tuft which extends at the back to his nape, highly-defined ears, enamel eyes, deeply-incised facial wrinkles, curved sculpting of brows, well-sculpted very thick moustache, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, bare feet, wearing original costume of striped homespun shirt and matching blanket, striped cotton breeches, silver necklace, and carrying woven basket with leather straps. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, mid-1700s, attributed to Giovan Battista Polidoro, an identical attributed figure appeared in the famous Catello Collection. The rare model has exemplary sculpting, portrayal, and wonderfully-preserved state.
