Description
30" (76 cm.) overall. Paper mache head with exaggerated sculpted and painted features of classic Polichinelle figure, painted brown eyes, long hook nose and jutting chin, row of painted teeth, front and back torso humps, carved wooden hands and lower legs, straw-filled body enclosed by costume. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1890, depicted is the theatrical classic Polichinelle. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved figure with original painted finish, wearing original cream and red flannel wool jester costume with lace and gilt buttons, gilt paper decoration, embroidered stockings, sewn-on leather slippers with upturned toes. Included is a 19" x 14" wooden framed panel with lithographed scene of French theatrical fair: the panel was commissioned by Huguette Clark from Au Nain Bleu and has Au Nain Bleu label on the bottom.
