18" (46 cm.) Gofun-finished ningyo with swivel head, inset heavily-lidded brown enamel eyes, painted features, elaborately-styled hair with painted stippling lines around the edges of face, and extending to hips, wearing six-layered robes in rich silks and brocades included outer robe with extended train and hand-painted designs, with hair ornaments, obi, sashes, and fan, and presented on original base and with original box "Bugaki" in Japanese lettering and Japanese lettering signature of "Mrs. Huguette Clark" on the left side suggesting that the doll was a special commission for her, likely from the series of characters representing "The Tale of Genji". Near mint condition, a stunning display ningyo in superb state of preservation. Japan, circa 1930s.
