Description
10" (25 cm.) Of padded fabric over wire armature with well-defined details of face and fingers, the lady has painted facial features, closed mouth, brunette hair, and is wearing her original costume of burgundy velvet with lace ruffled sleeves and, silk petticoats, silk brocade slippers, and elaborate jewelry and hair ornaments of colorful "jewels" with pearl edging. Condition: near mint. Marks: Dorothy Wendell Heizer (original sewn-in label). Comments: American artist, Dorothy Heizer, from a series of historic queens introduced in 1934; in the book, Dorothy Heizer, by Helen Bullard (1972), the author noted "had Dorothy Heizer not loved bead work, I doubt that she would have undertaken so many intricately decorated costumes...She counted the beads in a necklace or decoration". This portrait was inspired by a portrait of Catherine as Grand Duchess in 1748 at the age of 19. Value Points: perfectly preserved, including original artist stand, the doll is an artistic masterpiece.
