Description
13" (33 cm.) Bisque socket head depicting a crying child, painted blue eyes in narrow squinting shape, deeply-sculpted wrinkles and furrows around the eyes and forehead, black upper eyeliner, one stroke curvy brows, closed mouth modeled as though open in crying expression, sculpted tongue and row of teeth, brunette mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, nicely costumed. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 520 G.H. 5/0. Comments: Steinbacher, circa 1912, the character represented Jean Qui Pleure" (John who cries) based on the illustrations in the French children's novel by Comtesse de Segur; so popular were the characters in that story that they were created in doll form as well as statuary (see #162 of this catalog) yet it is rare to find the model made by a German firm. Value Points: very rare character with wonderful bisque and painting.
