Description
19" (48 cm.) Standing upon a burgundy velvet-covered base is a bisque portrait lady depicting Chinese lady, having gleaming amber-tinted complexion, brown glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, long lushly-painted lashes, wide brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with very full accented lips, pierced ears, black mohair wig in upswept manner over cork pate, slender carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms. When wound, music plays, while the lady elegantly turns her head in a sweeping movement while alternately lifting the tea pot she holds and pouring tea into a cup on the extended tray. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: N3 (head) (and original paper tune label on base indicating the song "Les Cloches du Monastere"). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, a unique facial model was created for this luxury automaton, commissioned from Emile Jumeau; it appears on no other automaton or doll. Value Points: the superb face and complexion is accentuated by the lady's especially intricate elegant movements, and by her original silk and brocade costume and hair ornaments.
