Description
15" (38 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head on bisque shoulder plate, small cut pate at very back of head, almond-shaped blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, rose blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth with two rows of tiny porcelain teeth, outlined lips, blonde mohair wig, muslin-covered midriff and upper arms and legs, bisque lower torso, bisque lower arms and legs with bisque bare feet. Condition: excellent excepting professional restoration to left baby finger, right thumb and upper left leg. Comments: Jules Nicolas Steiner, circa 1875, considered the first of the bisque bebe models, the taufling baby was inspired by the Japanese play doll exhibited at the London World Fair in 1855; various firms in both France and Germany presented variations of the doll, but the Steiner model was the only bisque version made in France. Value Points: exceptionally rare model to find, with rare detail of open mouth and teeth, very beautiful painting and eyes.
