Description
27" (69 cm.) Bisque socket head with luminous bisque, deep blue glass paperweight inset eyes with very thick dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with very full outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 13 (incised, somewhat illegible, could be 14). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1892, although not bearing the incised series number, the doll is indubitably the 223 art character model from the Jumeau "Series Fantastique" (see Theimer/Theriault's The Jumeau Book, page 370). Value Points: the rarity of the bebe is complemented by its superb sculpting, painting, and bisque, an overall gorgeous doll wearing beautiful antique silk and lace dress and bonnet, undergarments, stockings and shoes.
