Description
10" (25 cm.) figure. 13"l. cradle. Carved wooden taufling, flat-back carved wooden head with deeply sculpted brown curly hair, inset upper-glancing enamel eyes, tiny tongue tip, blushed detail of cheeks, chin and nose, attached to hollow-torso wooden panel which contains a number of early folded papers with names and messages in various old script writing, and a carton cover to the panel with German-language script (translated here) reading "In the interior of this statue of baby Jesus there are reliquaries from the holy land, and various graces" and signed "restored C.L. Rochus 1939". The figure is costumed in early silk and embroidered tapestry, and is presented in early carved wooden cradle with gold leaf finish. Germany/Austria, early 1800s.
