28" (71 cm.) Standing in elegant pose upon a velvet-covered wooden platform is a black-complexioned paper mache gentleman with brown glass eyes, highly-characterized portrayal, black painted brows, very full lips, slightly-hinged lower lip, row of teeth, black wiry hair, carton torso and slender legs, wire upper arms, black paper mache hands; holding a cigarette holder in his right hand, and a monocle in his left. When wound, he turns his head side to side and nods, eyelids blink, and he alternately bring his cigarette holder to his mouth and smokes, then brings his monocle to his eye to peer at the world. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well, smoking functions. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890. Value Points: rare automaton, functioning well, with unusual movement of lower lip, and with fine original finish and original costume comprising red jacket with long tails, ivory silk vest, shirt with tucks, bow tie, silk jewelry fob, top hat, leather shoes, leggings.
