Bisque socket head with very full cheeks and angular pointy-tip nose, blue glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and multi-feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with defined space between the shaded and outlined lips, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, early composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists, wearing antique sailor costume, undergarments, stockings, black leather shoes, grand sailor cap. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 14. Comments: Kestner, circa 1885, the model is known as the "A.T. Kestner" for its resemblance to the French A.T. bebe of the same era, whose market the doll attempted to capture. Value Points: a rare large size of the desirable and rarely-found model, with lovely bisque having a delicate luminous patina, superb sculpting with "first-from-the-mold" definition, wonderful antique costume. Ex-June Ellen Lane collection. The signature doll was featured for several years on a Theriault's shopping bag, stationery and other ephemera, and appears on Theriault's home page website.
