Description
17" (43 cm.) h. 11" x 8" base. Posed upon a velvet covered wooden base is a young girl with bisque head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, richly painted lashes and brows, closed mouth, very full lips, pierced ears, auburn mohair wig, cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing original aqua silk dress and woven laced bonnet. She stands behind a toy theatre with silk and velvet curtains, which when opened reveal a little wooden toy puppet, When wound, music plays, she taps the roof of the theatre and the curtain lifts revealing the little puppet who waves his arms. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: French, attributed to Renou, circa 1895, another example, with variations of costume and decorations, is shown in Automata, The Golden Age by Christian and Sharon Bailly, page 192. Value Points: delightful presentation is enhanced by the beautiful face of the young girl.
