15" (38 cm.) The flat-backed woven basket ("hotte") with embroidered velvet cover is filled to abundance with eight miniature dolls in original antique costumes, along with animals, dogs, candy boxes, rattles, and other childhood ephemera, centered by a paper mache gentleman holding violin, and guarded by a wooden soldier. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: presented for the French Etrennes holiday market, likely featured in a catalog of a Paris toy store of the season, circa 1895. Value Points: outstanding and delightful presentation is wonderfully-preserved and extremely rare.
