17" (43 cm.) Bisque head, blue glass inset eyes with darker blue outer rims, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, carton torso containing music box, wire upper arms, carved wooden lower arms and legs. When hand-wound with porcelain-tipped knob at back torso, music plays and the man briskly plays the violin he holds in his arms. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 4. Comments: French, circa 1880. Value Points: rare musical mechanical toy has very fine quality of bisque head, fine silk original costume, mechanism functions well.
