8 1/2" (22 cm.) Solid-domed paper mache swivel head with black complexion, on matching shoulder plate, black sculpted hair in tight curls, black enamel glass inset eyes, painted nostrils, closed mouth, paper mache lower torso, arms and legs, padded cotton upper arms and thighs, twill-covered midriff. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1865. Value Points: the taufling baby, whose body style is considered the original of the child doll, is very rare; few examples of the black-complexioned version exist, this example with all-original body and painting.
