Description
17" (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve-blushed eyeshadow, arched feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, ears pierced into head, brunette human hair wig over cork pate, stretched-kid-over-wooden body with shapely torso, dowel jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, extra pivot at upper arms, bisque lower arms and legs with well-defined fingers and toes of bare feet, later silk costume included. Condition: generally excellent, body especially sturdy, one finger tip chipped. Marks: A La Galerie Vivienne. Remond, Paris... (original paper label on torso). Comments: French, circa 1870, the luxury shop of A La Galerie Vivienne was established by Pierre Guillard in 1830 as a corset shop until its acquisition by Remond in 1867 when dolls and toys became its theme. Judging by the luxury quality of this doll, and other dolls and toys with the Galerie Vivienne label which are shown in Theimer's The Encyclopedia of French Dolls, the shop presented only playthings of the most luxurious manner. Value Points: very beautiful doll with finest bisque and painting, rare body in outstanding state of preservation and original boutique label.
