20" (51 cm.) Solid domed bisque head with flat-cut neck socket, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, open mouth, double row of porcelain teeth, pierced ears, carton torso containing clockwork mechanism, composition arms and lower legs, kid over hinged-metal upper legs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1885, when wound, the clockwork mechanism causes the doll, known as Bebe Gigoteur, to turn its head side to side, arms and legs to wave and kick, and the doll to cry "mama". Value Points: the doll was commissioned by the Parisien luxury doll shop of Au Nain Bleu, and has original paper label of the shop on its torso and on a cloth tag inside the dress.
