17" (43 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta shoulderhead with darkened complexion depicting rugged shepherd, sculpted tousled black curled hair with scrubby beard and moustache, enamel eyes, mouth modeled open with teeth, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden arms and legs, bare feet, wearing original costume of brown kidskin breeches, white muslin shirt, paper lined linen vest, fleeced vest, cotton sack containing baby lamb and carrying another lamb and wooden walking stick. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, mid-1700s, attributed to Francesco Celebrano, exceptional detail of sculpting and artistic painting of facial features.
