28" (71 cm.) Paper mache shoulder head of brown-complexioned lady with oval-shaped face and elongated throat, sculpted hair in arranged curls and captured at the nape with a red sculpted bow, brown glass inset eyes, black eyeliner, thick sculpted brows, aquiline nose, high cheek bones, closed mouth with smiling expression, brown muslin torso, brown composition lower arms, composition lower legs with painted stockings and sculpted black heeled shoes, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: LM 1900 (shoulders). Comments: American, attributed to Leo Moss, the early 20th century folk artist of Macon, Georgia, who created from found scraps an amazing group of black dolls, each individually sculpted and personified; the adult figures are especially rare. Value Points: outstanding sculpture of black lady with unique coiffure, gentle smile, original body and finish, perfectly preserved, and bearing a blue ribbon from 1998 UFDC convention, and shown in the January 1999 issue of Antique Doll Collector.
