Description
19" (48 cm.) Bisque socket head with inverted T-shaped cutout at the back of head, amber-brown glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, lushly painted lashes, wide brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with shaded and outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 8 (impressed mark). Bebe Vrai Modele Fabrication Jumeau (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, a commissioned head for Fouquet & Douville's 1891 registered design for sleeping and flirty eyes; the model was made by Jumeau for a very short period of time as Fouquet & Douville seem to have been unsuccessful in marketing their design. At that point Jumeau used the remaining head stock for his own production, using his standard paperweight eyes which are seen in this example. The story is told in The Jumeau Book by Theimer and Theriault, page 258. Value Points: rare model with very beautiful bisque and eyes, original wig, fine antique velvet dress, woven bonnet, undergarments, leather shoes signed SGDG Depose. (An example of the Bebe Jumeau with original Fouquet & Douville eyes is Lot #111 of this catalog).
