26" (66 cm.) Bisque socket head with very full cheeks and delicate complexion, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve- blushed eyeshadow, brushstroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with delicately-shaped outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette hand-tied human hair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent, light touch-up on pierced hole of left ear, 1/2" firing line at back crown rim that is original in the making. Marks: J (symbol) M. Comments: Mothereau, early period bebe, circa 1878. The Mothereau firm was short-lived, creating dolls only from about 1878 to 1882, in very limited production. Value Points: rare doll with beautiful sculpting, featuring full lower cheeks in the manner of Jumeau's Bebe Triste, very fine quality of bisque and delicate painting, beautiful antique silk dress.
