Description
23" (58 cm.) h. 24"l. The wooden-framed open-front stall with painted shingle designs on the roof, and shaped trees at the side, frames four comical figures with hinged standing bases, each with musical instrument, and with the lettering "En Avant la Musique" (Let the Music Begin) across the top. When the musicians were tipped backwards by tossed balls, the player earned a prize. The popular carnival game was created in a series of parlor toys known as passe-boule or toss games, such as this example,in a nostalgic nod to a delightful amusement. Excellent condition. French, late 19th century,a rare example.
