Description
21" (53 cm.) x 24". The early wooden-cased presentation with glass front and assembled with hand-cast iron studs presents a uniquely-costumed paper mache lady set in fanciful surroundings. The doll has shoulderhead, painted black short hair, painted facial features, kid body and is wearing a gown with net overlay that is decorated with metal and gilt paper tinsel and appliques. The doll stands in the center of a V-roofed alcove and is surrounded by rows of uniquely-constructed cut paper flowers which are dimensionally set away from the back wall by hidden wires, and are of variegated brilliant colors in fanciful designs. The side walls are decorated with colorful snowflake cut-outs. Condition: very good/excellent. Comments: circa 1840, likely American, the case was presented for several decades at the Mary Merritt Doll Museum in Pennsylvania. Value Points: unique presentation of the early doll with imaginative designs, and original decorated cabinet.
