The miniature paintings depict four woman with remarkable details of costume, facial expression, coiffe or coiffure, including one identified as Mary, Queen of Scots with remarkable detail of jewelry, another woman with ringlet curls peeking from her wonderfully-detailed lace coiffe and with exquisite jewelry (painting has split); a solemn-faced woman with ruffled white bonnet and pleated collar over simple black gown; and a woman with very elongated face and throat and having long ringlet curls. Excellent condition but as noted above. Late 18th/early 19th century.
