Description
26" (66 cm.) (including dome). An opulent scene depicts a bisque-head woman seated in a garden with lavish silk flower surroundings and garlands, the woman with bisque portrait head, aquiline-shaped nose, blue glass enamel inset eyes, artistically-painted features, closed mouth, ears pierced into head, luxurious pale blonde mohair wig with interwoven ribbons, carton torso, wire upper arms, paper mache hands with folded fingers, and wearing a very lavish silk costume with ribbon and gilt paper edging. Before the woman is a pedestal table with faux marble top upon which is arranged a myriad of bone and brass sewing tools, a red leather necessaire, tea cup and saucer and goblet, and the woman holds a fabric in her hands. When wound, she begins to tend to her needlework, her head inclined toward it, but then, she acknowledges her beautiful surroundings and lifts her head, gazing upward and side-to-side in a realistic manner. Condition: doll, costume and presentation are impeccably-preserved, glass dome reinforced (hidden behind garden vines), mechanism functions well, musical mechanism is not functioning. Comments: French, Jean-Marie Phalibois, circa 1875, with original labels from boutique. Value Points: stunningly beautiful vignette with luxurious detail of garden, sewing accouterments, gorgeous facial of woman, and opulent costume, with charming movements.
