Description
14" (36 cm.) seated. 18" standing, 5" baby. Polychromed terra cotta head with generously-modeled bosom, depicting gentle-faced woman gazing at the baby she holds, enamel eyes, heavily-modeled eyelids, brown sculpted hair with elaborate double-braided chignon at her nape, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted blue stockings, red clogs, wearing original folklore costume with buttoned-opened blouse enabling her to nurse the baby she is holding. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, mid-1700s, attributed to Francesco Celebrano, who, it is reported, specialized in depicting peasant people in folklore costumes.
