Description
24" (61 cm.) Figure. 27" including wooden base. Standing upon a velvet covered platform is a bisque head gentleman doll with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, lushly-painted lashes and brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, slightly-parted lips, row of porcelain teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, tall slender paper mache torso and legs, wire upper arms, metal hands, wearing silk Marquis costume and holding a cigarette holder in his right hand and an elegant gilt ormolu lorgnette in the other. The automaton is attached to a music box which winds separately. When wound, he turns his head side to side, then lifts the cigarette holder to his mouth, inhales, lifts his head and exhales, while alternately lifting the lorgnette to gaze at a nearby scene. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890. Value Points: rare automaton with elegant presentation of gentleman Marquis, luxury detail of accessories.
