Description
15" (38 cm.) x 14" box. 4"-6" characters. A heavy card stock box with vividly colorful lithograph on the lid depicting an audience clapping at circus performances is labeled "Circus Spearino", and opens to a bountiful collection of circus performers, animals and props, and includes planked wooden flooring (for insertion of figures to allow standing), and various tables, benches and chairs. The figures are each hinged at arm and leg joints to allow variation of poses, and each has well-detailed costume. The interior lid of the box has illustrated suggestions for posing (much in the manner of early Schoenhut circus ads), and was likely designed as a competition to the American wooden circus toy. Germany, early 1900s.
