12" (30 cm.) Solid domed wax-over-paper mache head with flat-cut neck socket, inset brown glass eyes, black shaded brows, open mouth, two upper and two lower teeth, painted black swirl curls above each ear, twill-over-paper mache torso with bellows mechanism, which when squeezed causes the doll to cry, turn head side to side, and wave arms and legs in the air, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1860, the doll is a likely precursor to the French Bebe Gigoteur of Jules Steiner. Value Points: delightful and rare little doll, with important historical position.
