Description
21" (53 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head depicting a worn-faced man with short sculpted black curls, well-shaped ears, enamel eyes, strong nose, dark shadowed beard stubble, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs with defined musculature, bare feet, wearing original costume comprising homespun shirt, blue chambray pants, jacket, brimmed hat, sash, and carrying early hand-cast metal trowel with wooden handle. Excellent condition, finish worn on legs. Neapolitan, mid-1770s, attributed to Lorenza Mosca, whose extensive presipio figures ranged from angels to oxen to everyday people, and were notable for their uncompromising naturalism.
