Description
27" (69 cm.) Paper mache head with flanged neck having tightly-curled sculpted hair, thickly-sculpted black brows, brown glass inset eyes with all-around black shading, well-formed nose, modeled closed mouth with sculpted tongue as though "licking his chops" in anticipation of a special treat, triple dimples impressed in each cheek, brown muslin torso, brown composition lower arms and legs, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leo Moss, circa 1920s, the doll was known by the Moss family as "Bobo", although the background of that reference remains a mystery. From the Myla Perkins collection, featured in museum exhibitions and in her book, Black Dolls (Collector Books, 1993), page 15, where the doll was described by the author as "the most comical and interesting of the Moss dolls...[with his] teasing, infectious smile".
