18" (46 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head depicting an aged kindly man with sculpted bald pate, impressed age lines with modeled moles, enamel eyes, sculpted grey thick brows, strong nose, painted scrubby beard-shadow, defined throat hollow, tow-wrapped posable armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted brown shoes, wearing early traveling costume comprising green velvet short pants, shirt, embroidered twill vest, sash, brown velvet jacket, leggings, cap, brown homespun cape, and carrying homespun carpetbag. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, mid-1700s, extraordinary highly characterized sculpture with fine artistic painting, attributed to Francesco Celebrano, the celebrated Neapolitan sculptor, a favorite of King Ferdinand IV, for whom he was commissioned to create his highly realistic figures.
