Description
14" (36 cm.) Bisque shoulderhead in downcast pose, brown sculpted hair with deep forelock and side curls, well-defined eye sockets with blue painted eyes, painted upper lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with shy smile, muslin stitch-jointed body, bisque lower arms, antique sailor costume. Condition: generally excellent, right hand restored. Comments: Germany, circa 1920, the doll was introduced by Louis Amberg, inspired by the child in the 1920 book, Phyllis May and her Dollies by Hazel Drukker. Amberg presented the doll in American-made composition models as well as commissioned all-bisque miniature dolls from Germany. This larger bisque shoulderhead example is a very rare variation. Value Points: rarity of the doll is enhanced by its poignant expression, wonderfully modeled hair and facial features.
