Description
9 1/2" (24 cm.) Carved wooden shaggy dog with deeply-sculpted fur, long curly tail and floppy ears, enamel eyes, carved open mouth with defined teeth and tongue, realistic painting of brown/white shading. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, late 1700s, attributed to Saverio Vassallo; the Vassallo brothers were noted for their wooden animal sculptures and Saverio especially concentrated on sculptures. It is said that he used the dogs of King Ferdinand IV as models for his works.
