Description
14" (36 cm.) Each has paper mache head with highly characterized features, pronounced nose and chin, painted side-glancing eyes and a closed mouth in wide beaming smile with painted teeth, periwig with side braids, very plump hollow stomach, wooden hands and feet. An elaborate silk Marquis costume is worn by each along with bicorn hat and leather shoes. Each separates at the waist for access to the polished sateen-lined candy container interior. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1885, the pair were offered as candy box containers from a luxury Parisian bon-bon shop. Value Points: very rare pair with wickedly charming expressions, wonderful and all-original costumes. Ex-collection Dina Vierney.
