Description
14" (36 cm.) Bisque socket head with plump round face, very full cheeks, large blue glass paperweight inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauve blushed eye shadow, brushstroked brows, accented eye corners and nostrils of tiny nose, closed outlined lips, well-defined chin, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists and flat-cut derriere. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Sch (with cross swords in shield, on head and also on pate and on flat ridge of derriere) 0 (head). Levavasseur & Ouachee (stamped on stomach). Comments: Schmitt et Fils, circa 1877, the bebe was sold in the luxury toy store owned by Levavasseur & Ouachee; the pair had succeeded Perreau Fils in 1876 and then, in 1879, founded the famous Parisian store of Au Paradis des Enfants. This particular bebe, thus, was created prior to that founding. Value Points: the beauty of the bebe is rivaled by its fine original state of preservation and markings; the bebe has original wig pate, body, body finish, chemise, costume and leather shoes with rosettes.
