18" (46 cm.) Solid dome paper mache shoulderhead with applied hair over painted pate, ivory-like complexion, painted large teal-blue eyes, black upper eyeliner, arched brows, curve-shaped nose, closed mouth with hint of smile, firmly-stuffed pink kid body with shapely waist, one-piece arms with mitten hands, one-piece shapely legs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1840. Value Points: superbly preserved condition of the early poupee with flawless complexion, very firm body, wearing original traditional costume of Ile de Re in the coastal Charente region of French, comprising patterned cotton dress, petticoat, stockings with original garters, hand-stitched black silk shoes with textured carton soles, chemisette, green silk fichu, and outstanding coiffe consisting of a muslin calotte under an elaborate outer lace coiffe with carton armature "wings" and long lace streamers ("braids").
