8" (20 cm.) Carved wooden head with rounded facial shape, gofun finish with lustrous sheen, painted features with heavily-lidded eyes, closed mouth with painted teeth, painted feathering of hair around the forehead, black painted pate beneath a human hair wig arranged in distinctive double-looped topknot indicative of his status as a court page, posed kneeling with carved wooden hands. Wearing a vibrant red silk kimono with layered ivory collars and sleeve edges, and with matching trousers decorated with black pom-poms, holding a fan. Excellent condition, some age spotting of trousers. Meiji era, circa 1880.
