Description
22" (56 cm.) h. including coiffure and shoes. Pale bisque socket head, brown enamel inset eyes with heavily modeled eyelids, painted lower lashes, arched brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with impressed lip detail, black human hair arranged in elaborate coiffure and decorated with silk flowers and beads, five-piece composition body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (illegible script on head). Comments: late 1800s, similarly costumed dolls were made with bisque heads by Simon and Halbig and others for the French market which was deeply intrigued with Asian culture at this time. Value Points: very rare bisque portrait of Japanese lady wearing her original elaborate costume comprising green silk trousers, red silk dress, and purple silk kimono, each decorated lavishly with embroidery, along with traditional wooden stacked shoes and elaborate headdress, and presented on original silk-covered wooden stand, under early glass dome.
