10" (25 cm.) h. 6"w. Standing upon a wooden box with dove-tailed construction and containing a hidden mechanism are two carved wooden black dolls with loosely jointed shoulders, hips and ankles, and having sculpted hair and painted facial features, painted gloves and stockings, and original costumes. When key-wound, the figures dance about in a carefree manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Automatic Toy Works of New York, founded by Robert Clay in 1868 and later purchased by Ives, Connecticut, circa 1880, who presented this model. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved early American toy, original finish, costumes and decoration on both dolls and the box exterior.
