20" (51 cm.) Of fine mahogany wood, a five-tiered spiral staircase is constructed with great cabinetry details, having fancily spindled railing, graduated width stair pads with rounded front edging which forms into a spiral decoration on the center pedestal; the staircase is mounted upon a matching wooden platform. Excellent condition. French, mid-1800s, the fine woods and expert cabinetry work indicate its original production as a maitrise model by apprentice cabinetmaker seeking to earn his professional acceptance; although not originally produced as a child's play object, it found its way in future years into that venue. This is a particularly fine example.
