Description
3" (8 cm.) x 4" painting. 7" x 9" frame. Each is an intricately detailed miniature painting portraying young children; in one a young girl in a tea shop is offering a tin container of tea to her little doll, and in the other the doll is being presented a new costume. The paintings are signed L.L. French, circa 1885, by the renowned painter, Luigi Loir, noted for his genre social scenes of fashionable children. He was commissioned on occasion to create art work for a series of trade cards for luxury goods stores; these trade cards can sometimes be found today but the original art, of which these are examples, is virtually unknown. The paintings came from the original Loir family archives before their holding in the Whittier Collection.
