15" (38 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head, bald pate with sculpted hair at sides of head, enamel eyes, incised age wrinkles, defined cheek bones, strong nose, row of painted teeth, painted beard stubble, tow-wrapped posable armature body with carved wooden lower arms and legs, painted brown stockings, black shoes with tan buckles, wearing original tan twill costume with brown embroidery, matching laced vest, burlap vest, coat with 18 covered buttons, hat, and with walking stick. Excellent condition. Neapolitan, early 1700s, attributed to Matteo Bottigliero, considered one of the leading sculptors, not only of presipio, but also of wood and silver statuary, in the early years of the that century.
