36" (91 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with distinctively cut crown pate cut (see photo), amber- brown glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with well-defined modeling between the shaded and outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette hand-tied human hair wig in long ponytail, composition and wooden fully jointed body, wearing fine early blue velvet Marquis costume with gold silk vest, black velvet cap, lace front shirt, woven stockings, and brown leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1878, the maker is likely Mothereau, according to the distinctive shape of the body jointing, and the exceptional detail of sculpting of all facial planes. The grand size indicates its possible presentation at the 1878 Paris Exposition L'Universal. Value Points: fabulously preserved, the doll has superior sculpting and bisque, delicate painting of complexion with subtle blushing on eyelids, ears, cheeks and chin, original body and superb antique costume.
