19" (48 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with oval-shaped face and plump cheeks, large pale blue glass paperweight eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, mauve blushed eye shadow, painted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth, defined space between the outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully jointed body with straight wrists, wearing lovely yet worn blue velvet princess-style dress with braid and lace trim, undergarments, leather boots, earrings, fine silk and lace bonnet. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 1 H. Comments: Aristide Halopeau, circa 1884, the successor to the prestigious Barrois firm created bebes from about 1877 to 1890 in very limited numbers; the heads were commissioned from Frayon of Montreuil, the painting of faces is known to be by Barnard, a well-known artist. Value Points: few models of the Halopeau bebe exist, this example with spectacular eyes enhancing the captivating expression, original body, and body finish. Ex-collection Mildred Seeley.
