Description
28" (71 cm.) One piece wooden head and torso with very full cheeks, elongated throat, shapely high bosom and tiny waist, linen-over-wooden upper arms with iron pin hinging, wooden lower arms and legs with dowel jointing at elbows, hips and knees, very shapely calves and separate fingers, brown enamel inset eyes, all-around painted lashes, heavy eyelids with black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, closed mouth, cheek blush, original wig. Condition: very good original finish with some typical rubs, small flake on upper left eye rim. Comments: English, circa 1730, the grand size and luxury costume indicate original presentation for aristocratic family. Value Points: the grand-sized doll with highly-characterized expression and original finish is wearing her original costume comprising blue silk damask open robe over rose hand-quilted silk petticoat, undergarments, superbly-fitted laced stays, blue and white checkered linen pannier, stockings with garters, fitted silk shoes with little heels, embroidered lace cap, leather gloves fitted to her hands, and, finally, hanging coin pockets with embroidered detail (one pocket embroidered S.S. and the other 1739). The doll has a blue ribbon award from 1988 UFDC convention, and was described ads "exceptional" in a 1994 Contemporary Doll Collector article titled "The Amazing Collections of Estelle Johnston" by John Darcy Noble.
